Deadline: June 23 • Hastings Arts Commission
OPEN CALL ART EXHIBITION: Art transports us to places real and imagined. We’re Not in Kansas Anymore explores the places that inspire us. Sometimes it’s a place we’ve experienced, sometimes a place we’ve only dreamed. Where has your art taken you?
Hastings-on-Hudson Arts Commission is calling artists to submit art works for a special exhibition, presented in association with Hastings Historical Society, commemorating actress Billie Burke (1884–1970), a stage and screen star and renowned comedienne adored for her role as Glinda the Good Witch in The Wizard of Oz. This movie classic, which premiered 80 years ago, transports us on a heroic magical journey. In tribute, we’re asking artists, where does your art transport you?
This exhibition marks the third in a series commemorating, through art and education, luminaries from the arts and sciences who lived or worked in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY. The Burke Estate was the residence of Billie Burke and Florenz Ziegfeld, the Broadway impresario, on and off for 30 years. The site is now part of Hastings High School’s athletic fields on Farragut Avenue.
ELIGIBILITY: Artists 18 years and older may submit up to three two- or three-dimensional finished artworks (or multiple images of the same work) in any media that responds to the theme, with a short description of why your place is important to you (50 words or less). Work may not exceed 80 inches in any direction. Artwork must be ready to hang. No proposals, please. Artists are responsible for delivery/pick-up of artwork.
FEE: $25 entry fee.
JUROR: Juror is Daniel Belasco, Executive Director, Al Held Foundation, and former curator of exhibitions and programs at Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art in New Paltz, and The Jewish Museum in New York.
